Timing Is Messy

Why time is perfect

Thought

Movies have brainwashed most people into believing that life happens in this perfect, magical sequence. That it all fits together like a perfect puzzle.

The lived experience doesn’t feel this way.

Life is messy, right?

Bad things happen to good people. Good things happen to bad people. People make mistakes even when they try hard to do good.

It’s all incredibly perplexing.

What’s funny is that although it’s messy in the moment, when you look back on it years down the road, the timing of everything suddenly seems perfect.

Each mistake taught you exactly what you needed to succeed the next time.

It’s almost as if the whole thing is being orchestrated by some man behind the curtain.

After 37 years on the planet, one thing I know for certain is this:

Time is God.

The timing of everything is exactly the way it should be. It’s only from our all-too-human perspective that it doesn’t make sense day-to-day.

Life can only be lived in the moment, but only makes sense in retrospect.

Always remember this when treading through the mess:

Everything turns out right in the end.

Struggling to make a lasting change?

One simple way to vastly improve your probability of following through with your word is to put skin in the game.

Putting skin in the game means laying something of yours on the line.

Something of significant value to you that you’ll lose if you don’t succeed.

One of the main problems with our current ruling class is that there’s no punishment for them when they mess up.

Without consequences, there’s no feedback mechanism.

This leads to frivolity of speech, bad decisions and futile action.

It’s the same thing when you tell everyone your plans, but don’t have anything concrete at stake.

An example from my personal life, I recently made a bet with a friend. I bet him $1,000 that I would make 3 one-minute videos and post them on Twitter every single week for the rest of the year.

It creates urgency and pressure to get things done and follow through on your word.

The thing is, you lose much, much more than $1K if you don’t make the changes you know you need to make and stay stuck in the mire instead of pursuing your destiny.

One of the secrets of a successful life is setting yourself up for victory.

Find ways to keep yourself on track and accountable.

Go out there and win.
