Above All Things
An Easter transmission
Thought
It’s Easter, so you know we’ve gotta meditate on a teaching of Jesus.
He gave us the ultimate spiritual teaching:
Love God above all things.
I often find myself reflecting on this simple 5 word sentence. So short and simple, yet so vast and all encompassing.
All the spiritual laws can be traced back to this one commandment.
But what does it mean? I’ll tell you where my study has taken me.
We can reformulate his teaching and put it less abstractly like this:
Do what’s right no matter what the consequences of doing right may be.
Sometimes doing the right thing means telling the truth to people who don’t want to hear it.
The life of Jesus is the archetypal example of this, for he was killed for speaking the truth: the greatest punishment for the noblest act.
You see, whether you believe it or not, like it or not, you are a combatant in a spiritual war that has been going on since before you were born and will continue on long after you die.
Time and again you will face temptation to cut corners and shirk responsibilities; tell a little lie here, forsake a little integrity there.
The voice that whispers to take the “easy” path is the devil himself.
That path may look easy at its start, but I promise it becomes impassable further ahead.
The true path isn’t easy, not even at the start, but it leads to victory in the end.
When temptation presents, reflect on these words:
Love God above all things, for doing right is the act of loving God more than you love money or safety or looking “good” or any of these temporary things of the Earth.
The great trick is to get you to trade your character for empty illusions.
Don’t fall for it.
For the only thing you take with you from this life is the wisdom you gain along the way.
A true man is aligned with truth and God and this will be reflected in your word and deed.
Stand tall against the darkness.
Stand true for the Light.

Never sacrifice your integrity.
No matter how tempting in the short run, it doesn't pay off.
Your character is your first and greatest asset.
