A Shield In The Darkness

How to construct your Honor Code

Thought

The world is a crazy place.

There are forces actively seeking to weaken and destroy you.

The greatest defense against this is a clear and complete Honor Code.

This is your personal blueprint of right action. A precise mapping of how you want to conduct yourself as a man in the world.

And you should never break your code in the face of temptation or pressure.

Living aligned with your principles when it is inconvenient is the hallmark of a virtuous man.

It’s acceptable to update your code when presented with new information, but an update is distinct from a break.

It sounds so simple, right?

Here’s the secret:

It is.

The thing about living a good and virtuous life is that it is the simplest thing in the world. Anyone who tells you otherwise is either confused or trying to sell you something.

Don’t misinterpret the simplicity as ease though. Adhering to your principles when everything is roses is easy. The true tests come in the storms.

How do you behave when you think you can get away with it? This is the real question.

The ability to face overwhelming difficulty and rise to the occasion with a force of spirit and resilience is called Mettle.

A principled life demands mettle.

So, with the why and how out of the way, let’s discuss the code of honor itself.

What should be in it? How long does it need to be?

Your code is a living and breathing creature. It will grow and develop with you over the years, but there are some things that are beyond debate and which must be included.

I’ll give you 4 cornerstones upon which you can build your Honor Code:

  • Be Magnanimous

  • Keep Your Word

  • Honor Yourself

  • Speak Truth

Tactic

What’s stopping you from being good at everything?

You should find a new hobby to explore every 12-24 months.

I pursued kickboxing for a little over a year and have recently started taking dance lessons.

By doing this, you become well-rounded.

By practicing something for 12 months, you’ll easily be in the top 10% of people on Earth at that thing.

Not only will you start to become highly capable, but you’ll meet a wider range of people and get to know what’s going on in your city.

Plus, it’s fun and makes you a more fun person.

And you’ll potentially stumble upon the thing you were born to do.

Zero downside, infinite upside.

Let’s go!
