No Is The Answer
A meditation on Focus
Thought
I had a lot of opportunities come my way in the last year. I said yes to almost all of them. “Yes” generates. It opens up adventure.
It can also be distracting.
In saying yes to so much, I spread myself thin.
This isn’t necessarily bad. I learned many things about myself and I have newfound clarity. So, after a period of heavy yes-ness, I’m going to refocus on the things that I find the most meaningful and impactful.
So, I’m going to pump the brakes on taking clients for a bit so I can focus my efforts on writing a book. It’s a lifelong dream of mine author a book. I have a few ideas brewing and want to pick one and go for it.
To do that, I need to focus. “Yes,” only gets you so far, once you arrive at clarity on something, you must turn to “No.”
People think focus means saying yes to the thing you’ve got to focus on. But that’s not what it means at all. It means saying no to the hundred other good ideas that there are. You have to pick carefully.
“No” is a powerful word. It’s empowers you to eliminate diversions and pursue a singular goal.
This will be a whole new level of writing for me to undertake. I’ll keep you posted of my progress in the months to come!
Tactic
I finished packing up my place today. I started chipping away at it a couple weeks ago and did a final big push this weekend.
Because I tackled the effort in smaller sprints and gave myself plenty of time, it never felt unduly stressful.
This is something I learned in engineering. Any problem that seems too big to be solved can be broken into smaller subproblems.
Carve any problem into doable pieces of work and you will make progress and eventually achieve your goal of solving the original problem.
