Make It Count
A meditation on Failure
Thought
I’ve made nearly all the mistakes a man can make and still be alive:
Addicted to drugs
Incarcerated
Homeless
Divorced
I mean, just take a look at that list! I have had some major fuck ups.
And yet, I am highly successful and lead a good life today.
How did I turn it around? I never let a failure go to waste.
Every single big mistake brought with it an even greater lesson. Life is an epic adventure and although it passes quickly, it also, paradoxically, goes on for a long, long time. Failure is a feature of life. I had the good fortune of making these massive blunders while I had plenty of runway left to course correct.
It’s okay to fuck up as long as you learn the lesson.
Most people overestimate what they can get done in a year and severely underestimate what they can accomplish in a decade.
Good decisions compound over time and you often don’t see their effects immediately. Take the feedback life gives you, stop doing the things that don’t work and bring you pain, and double down on the things that bring you goodness and success.
The life you are living now is the culmination of all of your decisions, but it’s never too late to start making better choices. If you start on a better path today and stick with it, I promise you will shock yourself with how great your life can become 10 years down the road.
It’s up to you to make your life count.

Everyone should know how to pan-fry a steak.

My dinner tonight. I cooked this after I wrote the Thought segment and wanted to share it with you!
Start by pulling your steak out of the fridge about an hour or so before you cook it, it’ll cook better if it’s at room temp. Pat it dry with a paper towel and season it with salt and pepper, then let it rest until it’s time to turn it into a masterpiece.
Put your burner on a fairly high heat (I use 7 out of 10 on my gas stove) and let your pan get hot. Once it’s hot, drop some butter into the pan and swirl it about.
Now, the magic happens:
Put the steak into the pan, always start with the edge closest to you and then lay it away from you. If you gave the pan enough time to heat up, the steak should give you a nice sizzle when you lay it down.
Flip your steak every 2 minutes. This will help it cook evenly and give it an epic crust.
Use a meat thermometer and stick it into the thickest part of the meat. Keep cooking and flipping until it reads 135 degrees for the perfect medium-rare steak.
Medium-rare is the only correct temp to cook steak.
Once it hits your target temp, remove it from the pan and let it rest for about 5 minutes before you eat.
Enjoy!
