Good Problems

A powerful mindset shift

Thought

“You’re my client with the good problems.”

I remember my attorney saying these exact words to me like it was yesterday.

This was towards the end of the toughest chapter of my life and it was hard for me to imagine anything about my life being good in that moment, but he was right.

Everyone has problems to deal with and solve; it’s a human universal. In my experience, the problems are life itself. There’s no getting away from them.

So, if you can’t escape the problems, what are you to do?

The first thing to do is trade in your mean and crude problems for higher order problems.

Higher order problems are the sophisticated and rewarding ones.

For example:

Years ago, I had to scramble to afford my next meal. Today, I make good money and even have to hire a CPA because my taxes have gotten rather complicated.

The more they want to tax you, the more money you’re making, the more you’re winning.

It’s still a problem, but it’s a good problem to have.

The second thing to do is to remember that your current set of problems are good. An easy way to do this is to never forget how shitty your old problems were.

Not being able to afford food is a lower order problem. Merely surviving sucks.

Humans value things through the lens of comparison. A sense of progression makes current circumstances more bearable.

Remembering how far you’ve come is a massive hack for remaining grateful.

Gratitude is the highest mindset.

What do I mean by highest?

Let’s think of a man who is grateful for his job. This man will be unstoppable in his responsibilities. He’ll be more fulfilled, work longer hours, be more resilient to challenges and produce higher quality results.

The same thing goes for a man who is grateful for his family.

And for the man who is grateful for the very air he breathes and the life he gets to live, what can possibly throw a man such as this off his center?

Nothing.
