Discomfort is your Friend
A meditation on embracing discomfort
Thought
To arrive in Italy, I had to take 3 flights and endure 18 straight hours of travel. It’s a cramped, exhausting experience.
When I arrived, I was jet lagged, disoriented and starving. Everything was in a different language and strange.
It was uncomfortable.
In the midst of the suck, my mantra was “Good.”
Discomfort means you’re alive.
Discomfort means you’re expanding your horizons.
Discomfort means you’re dancing on the edge.
Discomfort is your friend.
A couple techniques I use to deal with discomfort:
1. Put it in perspective
While stuffed into my little airplane seat, I could’ve been torturing myself mentally by covering all the suboptimal things in fine detail. Instead, I chose to reflect on my ancestors. To cross the Atlantic Ocean used to mean months of travel in worse conditions and a much higher probability of death. Compared to that, this was easy. Always put your suffering in perspective. It doesn’t negate it, but keeps it right-sized.
2. Don’t complain
Italian pizza is legendary. I was starving by the time I made it to the restaurant, but they were slammed and the food took over an hour to come out. I had legitimate things to complain about, but what would that do for me or my friends? Putting out negative commentary is optional. You can always choose to keep your complaints to yourself and remain silent or, even better, focus on the positive.
Tactic
The Stoic precept Amor Fati means “The Love of Fate.”
Every aspect of life falls into two categories: what is in your control and what is not.
Worrying about what is outside of your control is foolish and futile. Some of my greatest suffering in life occurred while refusing to accept what life handed me.
By focusing your attention on what you have power over (your thoughts, words and actions) you maximize your agency in this world.
Don’t waste time wishing things were different, instead choose to love reality and your fate.
This is your weapon against the vicissitudes of life.
