Consider The Inverse

How to escape tunnel vision

Thought

When someone isn’t getting what they want out of life, the most common reaction is to blame life for not being fair.

The person will shake their fist at God and then proceed to carry on behaving as they always have.

Jesus said you shall know the tree by its fruit. Your results are the fruit of the tree that is your life.

Blaming everyone and everything other than yourself for the results you’re getting is a trap.

It’s a trap that will keep you stuck in place for years and decades. No kidding, an entire lifetime could go to waste spinning your wheels in place.

Even if you’re right and it is their fault, at a certain point, what is being right worth if you are living a life you don’t want?

As the timeless saying goes, insanity is doing the same thing again and again and expecting a different result.

If you feel like this is resonating with you or any area of your life, I implore you to make the brave decision to detach from your fixed view of your circumstances.

You need to shake things up. You need to question your assumptions. You need to try something completely different than what you’ve been doing.

In other words, you need to escape your tunnel vision.

A favorite thought experiment of mine when I’m stuck is to think through doing the exact opposite of what I think I need to do to get what I want.

Ask yourself, what would I do if I absolutely wanted to avoid getting this thing I think I want? No matter how absurd, walk through it and deeply consider it for a time.

Like a film negative, considering the inverse can reveal things that weren’t obvious in the positive.

Oftentimes, all you need is to shift your perspective a single degree to the left or right to get a fresh look and find a new solution.
