A meditation on Gratitude
Thought
I’m writing this shortly after hitting 30K followers on Twitter.
It’s a proud moment for me and I appreciate your valuable time and attention.
So, I want to use this edition of The High-T Weekly to send a message of gratitude:
Thank you for reading my work.
Only a few short years ago, getting a thousand pairs of eyes on your writing was out of reach for most people. You either had to work at a newspaper or get a deal with a book publisher.
Today, you can amass an audience by pairing dedication with clear communication and originality.
It’s an exciting time to be alive, but only if you take advantage of the opportunities of today.
At first, publishing your work for the world to see can feel daunting.
What if my writing sucks?
What will people think?
Will they judge me?
I’ll tell you now, they will judge you.
But here’s the secret: it doesn’t matter what they think.
Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason to not follow your heart.
Creativity, like gratitude, is one of the highest states of consciousness you can access. It would be a shame to miss out on it because of what others might think.
You are the only one who can live your life, so you might as well make it the life you want to live.
Tactic
Here’s a basic writing tip: don’t edit as you go.
Writing and editing are two different skills.
When you’re writing your first draft, it should be a stream of consciousness.
It’s a process of self-discovery. You are telling yourself what it is you even believe.
The funny thing is, without writing, our viewpoint is more jumbled in our minds than we realize.
By writing out your position, your beliefs will be forced into focus. It’s the very nature of putting your words to paper.
If you edit while undergoing this journey, you’ll stifle your creativity and destroy any chance of entering the flow state.
So, write like a storm cloud pouring forth all the thunder, lightning and rain you have to give.
Then, take a break.
Come back to your words the next day with a fresh set of eyes and cut, cut, cut.
Write expansively and cut ruthlessly.
This will automatically 10X your writing.
